October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Santa Cruz Police Department will join the Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women, the Walnut Avenue Women's Center and other organizations in observing the month. Officers will wear purple ribbons in beginning next week to bring awareness to the issue.
In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. That
same year the first national toll-free hotline was begun. In 1989 the first
Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation was passed by the
U.S. Congress.
The Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women will be sponsoring some local events including a Day of Unity on October 1st from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm on Pacific Avenue.
