Sergeant Dan Flippo Promoted to Police Lieutenant

The Santa Cruz Police Department is pleased to announce the promotion of Dan Flippo to Police Lieutenant. Dan Flippo is a 21-year veteran of the department, who has served as Police Sergeant for the last 11-years.

"Lieutenant Dan Flippo brings a great deal of leadership, experience and passion to our management team," Police Chief Kevin Vogel said.

Throughout his career, Lieutenant Flippo has worked in Patrol, Investigations, Training, Traffic, the Downtown Unit, and the Street Crime Unit. Lieutenant Flippo has also been a Field Training Officer for new-hires, and has been a firearms and use of force instructor for the department. Lieutenant Flippo has authored policies and assisted with the adoption of training programs to improve department performance and safety. Lieutenant Flippo has been involved in, and conducted several presentations to the Santa Cruz Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Academies and the Teen Academies.

During his time supervising the Downtown Unit, Lieutenant Flippo was instrumental in a block-by-block organizing, to provide residents and business owners with a consistent point of contact from the police department. His actions and community outreach efforts have improved communication and trust between the community and the police department. Lieutenant Flippo has strong community ties, and believes those ties will help him further support the goals and mission of the Santa Cruz Police Department.

He holds an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and lives in Capitola with his wife and two sons.
