Detectives have been working non-stop around the clock since the shooting to develop and follow up on information. One of the motives we are investigating is an ongoing feud between Marcus Bates and Alejandro Sanchez that stemmed from their involvement in rival street gangs. Bates and Sanchez are documented members of rival street gangs. Both worked together at a Santa Cruz business and had previous disputes in their workplace.

On Friday night, a confrontation occurred as the two parties happened upon each other traveling on Mission Street. There were three vehicles involved in the confrontation; a silver Honda Accord, silver Chevy Impala and a black Honda Civic. The confrontation turned to gunfire as shots were exchanged between the occupants of the vehicles while they traveled northbound on Mission Street. Two of the three vehicles were hit with gunfire.

A team of technicians from the Department of Justice Crime Lab assisted in the collection and documentation of evidence found along the Mission Street corridor. This included evidence items such as vehicle fragments and bullets.

Both suspect vehicles have been recovered and impounded by detectives. The vehicles will be processed by detectives with the assistance of technicians from the Department of Justice Crime Labs.
Detectives are continuing to canvass the Mission Street area for any other bullets, fragments or bullet-strike locations. If you believe you have found one of these on your property please call our Investigations Unit at (831) 420-5820.
