Assemblymember Bill Monning sent a letter on behalf of the Santa Cruz Police Department (SCPD) to Jim Humes, Executive Secretary of Administration, Legal Affairs, and Policy in the Governor’s office. In the letter the Assemblymember asked Mr. Humes and the Governor’s office for support of SCPD’s request for $50,000 from the Governor's Reward Fund to help with information about the homicide of Carl Reimer. Knowing that gang-motivated crimes generally reduce the number of witnesses willing to come forward and provide information, the Assemblymember wrote the Governor’s office to stress that funding from the Governor’s Reward Program is essential in obtaining information critical to solving cases of this nature, and that offering a larger reward sum encourages potential witnesses to come forward and assist SCPD in solving the case of the death of Mr. Reimer. We appreciate Assemblymember Monning’s support and hope it is helpful in our receiving this reward opportunity. SCPD looks forward to bringing this case to a close, and believe that this reward is an essential element.

Santa Cruz Police Request $50,000 From Governor’s Reward Fund For Unsolved Homicide
Police Chief Kevin Vogel requested $50,000 from the Governor’s Reward Fund for the Carl Reimer homicide. Our investigators refuse to give up on the case and believe the offer of a $50,000 will provide an inducement for witnesses to come forward. Chief Vogel has also directed investigators to look at other recent homicides for consideration for the reward. The Governor's legal affairs unit will process the request and the Governor makes the final determination. As the one year anniversary of the Reimer homicide has just occurred, it is essential that the department does all that is possible to keep the case active.
