Safeway Purse Snatch Robbery Suspect Caught

The Santa Cruz Police Department is pleased to announce the arrest of one suspect involved in the Purse Snatch Robbery from the Safeway store at 117 Morrissey.

The suspect is a 17 year old San Jose resident, attending Oak Grove High School in San Jose.  Because he is a juvenile, we cannot identify him by name.

The power of social media and strong parenting came through on this one.  The suspect’s mother saw the images from our blog and recognized him as our suspect.  Her son was living with his father at the time.  Late last night, mom went straight to the home and retrieved her son.  She drove him to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s office and turned him in.  Santa Clara County detained him until our officers could arrive and take custody.

God Bless this Mom for her courage and strength!!!

Thank You to everyone who posted, shared, and retweeted these photos.

Our detectives responded and interviewed the suspect, where he confessed t the crimes, but would not identify his accomplices.  The suspect explained his actions by say he was extremely high on marijuana and did not want to suffer the consequences of “coming down”.  He stole the purse with the intent of using any money found to purchase more marijuana.

Our two remaining suspects and their vehicle are still at large.  The vehicle is described as:

Red small car similar to a Honda Civic or Accord.  The car had white lettering across the back window that stated “INDOW TINT”.  (like “window” without the “w”)

The remaining suspects are described as Hispanic males late teens or early twenties.

#1 – wearing a white sweatshirt, blue or black jeans and a green and white beanie

#2 - wearing a brown sweatshirt and blue or black jeans

Here are images of them captured by the video:
