Free Seminar on Thursday, July 12th

The Santa Cruz Police Department hosts a free de-escalation preparedness presentation, titled Crisis Intervention: What Would You Do on Thursday, July 12th from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.  Ask yourself, what would, could or should you do when a person in crisis or mental distress crosses your path? The training emphasizes the importance of situational awareness, de-escalation, and self-protection in real-world crisis scenarios related to workplace and community interactions. The seminar is open to the public. The location of this presentation is the Santa Cruz Police Community Room, 155 Center Street.

"Unfortunately, we see the threat of agitated individuals in businesses, on the streets and in schools becoming more prevalent," said Chief Andrew Mills. "Being prepared, knowing how to respond, and understanding the signs of a potential threat of violence before an incident occurs is now a necessity.”

The Santa Cruz Police Department offers a free presentation to the public titled, The Crisis Intervention: What Would You Do?  Designed to educate and empower attendees with information to help them recognize, prepare for, and respond to a person in crisis to de-escalate the incident. Participants learn through various crisis situations, the effects of fear-induced stress on the mind and body, how to choose the correct response, and tips on how to prevent an incident from happening. “The response methodology we teach can be utilized in any situation and is a simple, straightforward approach that is easy to understand,” stated Lieutenant Christian Le Moss, who will conduct the presentation.

 

Santa Cruz Police Department is very proactive in training our City employees, school district staff, private schools, places of worship and businesses in our community for workplace violence and active shooter scenarios. We now offer this crisis intervention training to our residents. July 12th is the first of several opportunities for community members to attend the Crisis Intervention: What Would You Do?.

About The Presenters: SCPD Lieutenant Christian Le Moss and Sergeant Carter Jones are certified instructors in defensive tactics, trained in de-escalation techniques and communication skills necessary for dealing with people in a mental health crisis. They provide workplace violence training and active shooter preparedness training to citizens, businesses, First Responders and Law Enforcement.

Keeping Santa Cruz Safe: SCPD Officers Successfully Deescalate Incident - Arrest Man With Gun Who Threatened Juvenile

On Saturday, March 17th, 2018 at 3:15 pm, Santa Cruz Police Officers responded the 800 block of Pacific Avenue regarding a male adult who flashed a gun at a juvenile. The suspect threatened the juvenile with a firearm stating that he would “blow his brains out.” The subject was described as a white male adult with a blonde beard and wearing a multi-colored shirt. He was reportedly last seen walking on Pacific Avenue towards Maple Street.

Officer Badeo and Sergeant Azua immediately located the subject on Maple Street. When the officers approached, the suspect quickly turned away from the officers and reached for the suspected gun in the waistband area of his pants. The responding officers un-holstered their department-issued firearms and gave commands for the man to stop. The subject, later identified as Jeffrey Greer, 28 years old, from Boulder Creek, pulled out a black pistol from his waistband.

Initially, Mr. Greer did not comply with the multiple orders from the officers to drop the gun. Eventually, officers were able to de-escalate Mr. Greer’s stance. He complied, dropped the gun and surrendered. The black pistol that Mr. Greer had in his possession turned out to be a BB gun/Airsoft gun replicated in the make and model of Smith and Wesson M&P.

Said Police Chief Andrew Mills, “ I commend my officers for their restraint and patience during incidents like this. I can’t applaud these officers enough for their use of training, judgment, and teamwork to deescalate this potentially life-threatening situation.”

Santa Cruz Police placed Jeffrey Greer into custody for these listed charges; criminal threat with intent to terrorize, alteration and display of an imitation firearm in public and committing a felony while released on bail.

Santa Cruz Police Talks Suspect with Gun To Surrender
On Friday, 9/8/17 at approximately 5:39 pm, Santa Cruz Police responded to a residence near the 400 block of Plateau Avenue for a suspect who held a .22 caliber gun to a victim's chest. In addition to the on-duty patrol team, SCPD utilized officers that are part of the SCPD Crisis Negotiation Team.

Glen Eikenbary, 61 years old, from Santa Cruz

The suspect, Glen Eikenbary, 61 years old, from Santa Cruz, threatened to kill one of two male relatives in the home. Glen Eikenary pointed a .22 caliber gun at male relative’s chest and told him he would kill him. In fear for his life, the other family member barricaded himself in another room and called 911.

SCPD called on Officer Bayani from the SCPD Crisis Negotiation Team to interact with the victim and the suspect. Ultimately, Officer Bayani was able to negotiate with and convince the suspect to calm down and to come out of the house. Officer Bayani also convinced the victim that he was safe as well. Officers located the loaded gun used in the assault in the living room. Officers found several more guns inside the residence. SCPD officers arrested Glen Eikenary for assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threat with intent to terrorize.

Thanks to the great work of our patrol and Crisis Negotiation Teams, SCPD brought this risky situation to a successful conclusion without any injuries.

Home Burglar Arrested
On Saturday 9/9/17 at about 1:56 am, Santa Cruz Police responded to an interrupted residential burglary in the 600 block of Escalona Drive. The suspect had come in through the home through an unlocked sliding glass door. The suspect fled the house when residents announced their presence. Santa Cruz Police set up a perimeter in the neighborhood and the surrounding area in hopes the suspect would show himself.

Around 2:31 am, a homeowner in the 100 block of Hollywood Avenue called to report another occupied residential burglary, and the suspect description was a match to the original suspect from Escalona Drive. SCPD patrol set up a perimeter and did yard to yard searches; at this time the suspect eluded capture. Then, a breakthrough. An observant citizen called from the 100 block of Peyton Street to report a male subject running across Mission Street, then south on Walnut Avenue.

Several SCPD units responded immediately and detained the suspect Terrance Alexander, 40 years old, from Santa Cruz. Among the stolen items in Mr. Alexander possession was a driver's license in his pocket with the matching address of a home that was burglarized.

SCPD arrested Terrance Alexander for burglary and possession of stolen property. A great team effort by citizens and SCPD patrol.

K-9 Team Officer Terry and Luna

On 9/10/17, the Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting in Aptos, where one victim suffered a gunshot wound, and multiple suspects fled the scene on foot. SCPD K-9 Team of Officer Terry and Luna were requested for assistance with the search. K-9 Officer Terry and Luna located one outstanding suspect and one firearm.
