NEW YEAR’S EVE STATISTICS
The Santa Cruz Police Department used its entire staff of Police
Officers and Community Service Officers to handle the anticipated crowds
downtown and additional calls for service in the remainder of the city throughout
New Year’s Eve.
Crowds gathered for the City sponsored countdown celebration
at the Town Clock where temperatures dipped to approximately 41 degrees. The Police Department estimated the crowd
size at 7,000, down slightly from the 2011 estimate of 9,000.
Officers stayed busy throughout the downtown ensuring a safe
New Year’s Eve celebration for all.
Officers in the downtown made a total of 22 arrests: 21 of those arrests were for public
intoxication. One arrest was for
possession of narcotics. Officers issued
a total of 31 citations: 24 of those
citations were “Triple Fines” for alcohol possession, pursuant to the Safety
Enhancement Zone.
Although the crowd size was smaller, arrest stats were up
slightly from 2011. In 2011, Officers
made 15 arrests and issued 24 citations.
Stay tuned in the days ahead for additional statistic comparisons regarding police activity from 2011 and 2012. For now, we're wishing you a safe and healthy 2013.
